Before a single viewer clicks play, they click the thumbnail. It is the first and sometimes only thing standing between a video getting watched by millions or disappearing into the algorithm. Astrum — one of YouTube’s most respected science channels — understands this better than most, and right now they are hiring a freelance graphic designer to own that frame. The pay runs from $15 to $25 per hour, the work is fully remote, and the window to apply is closing in approximately 14 days. If you design for impact, this role was built for you.
About This Role
Astrum’s thumbnails have to do something genuinely difficult: make the cold vastness of space feel urgent, personal, and unmissable in a 1280 by 720 pixel rectangle. That requires more than technical Adobe skills — it requires a designer who understands visual psychology, knows how YouTube’s recommendation engine rewards click-through rate, and can translate complex scientific concepts into a single compelling image that makes a person stop scrolling.
As Astrum’s freelance thumbnail designer, you will work closely with the production team to develop thumbnail concepts for each new video. You will take the script brief, the video title, and the core visual idea and build a thumbnail that earns the click — bold typography, striking imagery, clear focal hierarchy, and a visual tension that makes the viewer feel like they are about to find out something they absolutely need to know.
The role also has an animation and motion graphics dimension. Astrum uses After Effects for certain visual elements across its content, and a designer who can move fluidly between static graphic work and lightweight motion will have a significant advantage in both the application process and the ongoing engagement. This role suits someone who lives and breathes visual communication, studies what works on YouTube, and brings genuine creative ambition to every brief — not someone who applies a template and calls it done.
Key Responsibilities
- Design high-impact YouTube thumbnails for Astrum’s video uploads using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, working to brief specifications provided by the production team
- Develop multiple thumbnail concepts per video where required, presenting clear rationale for creative decisions
- Apply visual hierarchy, typography, color theory, and compositional principles to maximize click-through rate performance
- Create motion graphics and animated visual elements for video content using Adobe After Effects
- Collaborate with scriptwriters and video editors to ensure thumbnail visuals align with video content and title framing
- Iterate on designs quickly based on editorial feedback, maintaining quality across multiple revision rounds
- Stay current with YouTube thumbnail trends, competitor channel benchmarks, and platform algorithm behavior
- Maintain organized asset libraries and deliver final files in formats and specifications required by the production workflow
Required Qualifications and Experience
Essential:
- Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop — your portfolio must demonstrate this, not just your CV
- Working knowledge of Adobe After Effects for motion graphics and animation
- A strong portfolio of YouTube thumbnail work or equivalent high-stakes digital graphic design
- Understanding of visual communication principles — hierarchy, contrast, typography, color, and composition
- Ability to work to tight turnaround times — video production schedules do not wait for design
- Reliable internet connection and a computer capable of running Adobe Creative Suite without performance issues
Desirable:
- Direct experience designing thumbnails for YouTube channels with 100,000 or more subscribers
- Familiarity with A/B thumbnail testing and YouTube Studio analytics
- Background in science, space, or educational content — understanding what Astrum’s audience responds to is a genuine advantage
- Experience with motion graphics beyond After Effects — Cinema 4D, Blender, or similar 3D tools
Skills and Competencies
- Visual instinct for what makes a YouTube viewer stop scrolling — not just aesthetic taste but performance-oriented design thinking
- Speed without quality sacrifice — thumbnail design in a production environment means fast turnaround on multiple concepts simultaneously
- Creative confidence to bring original ideas to a brief rather than defaulting to what has already been done
- Feedback receptiveness — the ability to separate ego from craft and iterate quickly on direction changes
- Attention to technical detail — correct file formats, resolution specifications, and color profiles matter at export stage
