By Amina Waweru | INGO Recruiter & UN Careers Advisor, 9 years placing East African candidates with UN agencies across the continent | April 2026 Last updated: April 2026

UN Women Africa internships are open right now — and April 2026 is one of the stronger posting cycles the agency has had in recent years, with openings spread across East, West, Southern, and North Africa. If you’re a student or recent graduate looking to build a career in gender equality, women’s rights, humanitarian response, or development finance, this is a programme worth applying to seriously. Here’s exactly what’s available, who qualifies, and how to put together an application that gets shortlisted.

About the UN Women Internship Programme in Africa

UN Women is the United Nations entity dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women. Its Africa regional presence spans country offices, multi-country offices, and a regional office for East and Southern Africa headquartered in Nairobi. The agency runs an internship programme that places graduate-level candidates in functional units ranging from programme management and communications to finance, monitoring and evaluation, and policy research.

UN Women Africa internships typically run for three to six months, are largely unpaid (stipends depend on duty station budgets and are not guaranteed), and require candidates to be currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a recognised degree programme. All official vacancies are posted exclusively on the UN Women careers portal — do not apply through third-party sites.

This post was compiled from vacancies sourced directly from the UN Women official employment page and verified as of April 2026.

Who Qualifies for UN Women Africa Internships

The eligibility rules are consistent across all duty stations. Read these carefully before you apply.

Academic status: You must be enrolled in a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD programme, or have graduated within the past 12 months from any of these levels. UN Women does not accept candidates who graduated more than a year ago, regardless of experience.

Funding: UN Women does not pay a salary. Stipends exist at some duty stations but are not a programme commitment. You must demonstrate — and in some cases prove in writing — that you have personal savings, a university scholarship, or external funding to cover your living costs for the full internship period.

Health insurance: Mandatory. You must hold valid health coverage for the duration of your placement. Arrange this before accepting an offer.

Immediate family exclusion: If a parent, sibling, or spouse is employed by UN Women, you cannot intern there. This applies globally.

No prior UN employment exclusion: Candidates who have previously served under a UN staff contract (not internship) may face restrictions. Check the specific vacancy notice.

For full programme terms, see the UN Women employment page.

How to Apply for UN Women Africa Internships

Step 1: Go to the official source only

All applications are submitted through the UN Women employment portal. Create an account, complete your candidate profile in full, and set up job alerts filtered by “Internship” and your preferred region or country.

Step 2: Prepare your P11 form

UN Women requires the UN Personal History Form (P11) for all applications. Download the current version, complete every field, and save as PDF. Your P11 and your CV must be consistent — any discrepancy is flagged.

Step 3: Write a one-page cover letter targeted to the specific duty station

Name the exact position and office in your opening sentence. In the body, connect your academic background and any relevant experience — research projects, volunteer work, previous internships — directly to the work of that specific country office. Close with a clear confirmation of your availability dates and your financial self-sufficiency.

    Step 4: Assemble your documents

    • Completed P11 form
    • CV (maximum 2 pages)
    • Cover letter (1 page, addressed to the specific office)
    • University enrolment letter or graduation certificate (within 12 months)
    • Proof of health insurance or a letter confirming you will arrange it before the start date
    • Passport copy or national ID

    Step 5: Submit and monitor

Submit at least 48 hours before the deadline. Keep your confirmation email and application reference number. If you receive no response within four weeks of the deadline closing, one brief professional follow-up email to the hiring office is appropriate.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Are UN Women Africa internships paid in 2026?

Most are unpaid. UN Women’s internship policy does not guarantee a stipend — payment depends entirely on the duty station’s available budget. Some offices in Nairobi, Pretoria, and Dakar have provided monthly stipends in past cycles; others have not. The vacancy notice will state whether compensation is available, and your Letter of Appointment will confirm the exact amount. Never accept a placement assuming a stipend exists.

Can I apply from outside Africa for a UN Women internship in Africa?

Yes. UN Women internships are open to applicants of any nationality. That said, candidates who are already based in or near the duty station have a practical advantage: UN Women does not pay relocation costs, and duty stations prefer candidates who can start without logistical delays. If you’re applying from the diaspora, state clearly in your cover letter that you are prepared to self-fund your relocation.

How long does the UN Women internship selection process take?

Typically four to eight weeks from the application deadline to an offer. The process includes an application review, a shortlist, a competency-based interview (usually video call), and reference checks. Some duty stations move faster — field offices in emergency contexts have placed interns within three weeks of closing.

Do UN Women internships count toward UN staff experience?

An internship does not count as UN staff service for grading or contract purposes. However, it does appear on your UN profile and is recognised by hiring managers across the system. Many candidates use their internship performance assessment and supervisor reference to apply for UN Volunteer (UNV) assignments or Junior Professional Officer (JPO) programmes immediately after.

What French level is needed for Francophone Africa positions?

For West Africa (Dakar) and DRC (Kinshasa), professional working proficiency is the minimum — meaning you can draft documents, participate in meetings, and communicate with partners entirely in French. Conversational French is not sufficient for these roles. If your French is at B2 level or below, focus your applications on Anglophone offices (Nairobi, Pretoria, Addis Ababa) and work on your French in parallel.

Vacancy information was sourced directly from the UN Women official employment page. Always verify deadlines and requirements on the official portal before submitting your application.
