About the Role
The Associate Research Scientist (Applied AI) will focus on integrating artificial intelligence into advanced scientific computing environments, bridging the gap between AI innovation and scientific research. The successful candidate will improve data analysis, modelling, and computational performance across disciplines, while contributing to global scientific publications and ICTP’s international research mission.
Key Responsibilities
Applied Artificial Intelligence Research
- Conduct advanced studies in machine learning and AI systems
- Contribute to global scientific publications and research innovation in applied AI
- Develop and implement AI-based solutions to improve scientific computing tools, enhancing performance and efficiency
Scientific Software Development
- Improve scientific computing tools by integrating AI-based solutions
- Develop, test, and optimize algorithms and software systems for high-performance computing environments
Academic Mentorship
- Mentor graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and visiting scientists under ICTP’s academic programmes
- Contribute to capacity building in AI and computational science for researchers from developing countries
International Collaboration
- Participate in global workshops, seminars, and research conferences under ICTP programmes
- Collaborate with international research institutions, UN agencies, and scientific networks
Required Qualifications
Education
- PhD or equivalent doctoral degree in one of the following fields:
- Computer Science
- Artificial Intelligence
- Mathematics
- Physics
- Or a closely related discipline
Experience
- Minimum 2 years of experience in one or more of the following:
- Applied AI research
- High-performance computing
- Scientific programming
- International research exposure is highly preferred
Skills & Competencies
- Strong expertise in machine learning and AI systems
- Experience with computational and scientific tools and environments
- Ability to manage and analyse large-scale datasets
- Excellent written and spoken English communication skills
